5 of 5 stars The only book of its kind, November 22, 2000
Reviewer: A reader from Pennsylvania
Given the fact that I just bought the Fireplace book and loved it, I was personally annoyed by the review that found fault with the book. We looked and could not find any other books that were as comprehensive as this one, which is all about how to work a fireplace into one's overall room design. I personally found the room arranging ideas helpful, and I also have rearranged objects on our mantel, using ideas from the book. My husband is using ideas from the book to figure out where to put the fireplace into the master suite that we are adding on. The fireplaces shown range from modern to traditional, country, Victorian, and everything in between. Some are old, some new, some woodburning, some gas. I even learned about new editor-approved electric fires that mimic the real thing. I also liked the fireplace makeovers, because we hope to change the style of ours (which more than 20 years old) in the near future.

If you know absolutely not the first thing about masonry, here's an excellent basic starter book from the editors of Sunset Magazine that includes clear explanations of tools, materials, and step-by-step guidelines for a wide range of masonry projects for the do-it-yourselfer. Like all of Sunset's how-to books, it's well illustrated, wellindexed, and written in clear language to help anyone get a working, hands-on start to the art and science of masonry.

This is a good book for the homeowner who wants to know how to build a garden wall, pave an area, or lay cast concrete. Covers tool selection and uses, building techniques with brick, stone, blocks, adobe, and concrete. Excellent step-by-step instructions and illustrations show you how. Learn tricks of the trade, even how to make you own paving blocks. Also covers maintaining and repairing masonry.

We are always on the lookout for new chimney related books and tapes.  If you have any suggestions to add to this list, please notify us at mpadgitt@earthlink.net

4 of 5 stars Very Good Book., February 27, 1999

This is a very good book on designing good solid single face, multiple face, and Rumford fireplaces. There are many simple to understand formulas to insure proper operation and look. Much of the Uniform Building Code concerning chimneys and fireplaces is reprinted and explained as well. There is also excellent information on designing with an eye to seismic reinforcement. The only problem I saw with this book was the lack of information on framing around the fireplace. It seems that niether framing books nor masonry books treat this subject though. Overall a very thorough treatment of chimney's and fireplaces.

Book Description
Whether there is a fire burning or not, there is something about a fireplace that gives a room warmth. The mantel we build around the fireplace becomes a focal point of decorating, bringing to all that surrounds a sense of elegance. In this new book Steve Penberthy and Gary Jones help the homeowner build a classic fireplace from stock materials and moldings and tools found in the most basic of workshops. From measurement to the finished product, they take the reader through the complete process. Every step is illustrated with a color photograph and a concise instruction. In the back are drawings and photographs of many design variations that can be made using the same building techniques. This is the, without a doubt, the best book ever published on building mantels and will be a welcome addition to the woodworker's library., 200+ color photos & line drawings, 8 1/2" x 11"

With this specialty book specifically for those about to embark on a do-it-yourself masonry repair or building project, Kreh, a recognized third-generation master mason, provides all the basics on tools and materials, estimating materials needed for any project, descriptions and diagrams of bond patterns and wall types, fundamentals of laying brick and block, and clear, useful information on masonry repair and restoration for preexisting work. Chimneys, retaining walls, foundations, decorative walks and planters, steps, and all varieties of construction masonry are covered here with excellent diagrams; explanations of terminology, tools, and materials; and photographs that vividly illustrate some of the finer points of masonry work.
Kreh's many years as a teacher of masonry techniques and practices shine through for the reader with no prior knowledge of masonry with clear, easy-to-understand terminology and a step-by-step approach, and his extensive experience and knowledge will open the eyes of longtime professionals with pointers and shortcuts they may not know themselves. This is a thorough, complete guide to masonry for all. --Mark A. Hetts
